CataLysis Network Conference 2022

CataLysis Network Conference 2022

03.05.2022 – 05.05.2022, Hotel LaStrada, Raiffeisenstraße 10, 34121 Kassel

After two years of restrictions caused by the Corona pandemic, we were finally able to organise a joined conference with our CataLysis Network and again enjoy the personal contact and fruitful discussions with other scientist!

The CataLysis Network Conference 2022 brought together the communities of the German DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centers (CRCs) or Transregios (TRRs) working within the field of catalysis. 250 participants form the CataLysis CRCs had the chance to exchange on their latest fascinating research and to discuss interdisciplinary topics like F.A.I.R. research data (together with NFDI4Cat). Furthermore, we had amazing, selected talks (four per CRC), presented in two parallel sessions and 114 posters. In addition, we provided a panel for networking for early-career group leaders.

To stimulate discussion, leading national and international experts were invited for keynote plenary lectures.

Keynote Lectures:

Prof. Silvia Bordiga, University of Turin, Italy – “Copper speciation in Cu-exchanged zeolites”

Prof. Jillian Dempsey, UNC Chapel Hill, USA – “Generating Solar Fuels with Hybrid Photoelectrodes”

Prof. Carmine Gaeta, University of Salerno, Italy – “Biomimetic Supramolecular Catalysis in Confined Space“

Prof. Graham Hutchings, University of Cardiff, UK – “Catalysis using gold nanomaterials”

Prof. Jenny Yang, University of California, Irvine, USA – “Bioinspired Catalysts for Renewable Fuels”

Prof. Ulrike Diebold, TU Wien, Austria – “Establishing the fundamentals: atomically-resolved chemistry with surface science techniques“

Networking Session early-career group leaders

The following topics were proposed by early-career group leaders for round table discussions with colleagues and postdocs:

Round Table Discussions for early-career group leaders (Photographer: Dr. Elisabeth Rüthlein, CRC 1333)
  • What advice do you wish you had received early in your career?
  • Do you think about work/life balance? Or do you view it more as a work/life fusion?
  • How do I begin to find a mentor/sponsor in my organization and what should I be discussing with my mentor/sponsor?
  • What difficulties can doctoral students and post-docs abroad expect in a new working environment, but also in their private lives, and how can we support them?
  • As an early career scientist, how do you develop and demonstrate confidence and assertiveness in an effective way.
  • How do I choose the right lab? What should I be considering?
  • Cultural Conflicts
  • Funding for postdocs and for young investigator group leaders, possibilities, how to succeed, what is important to consider?
  • Communication in science, networking, search of the stakeholders
  • In addition to the topic of biases: becoming a group leader in the network/environment where you are/were established as a postdoc
